I was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and have since lived in or traveled to 23 countries gathering materials and inspiration for my work. My search for materials has taken me from finding shed Caribou antlers on the eastern coast of Greenland, to bringing home exotic woods from the rain forests of Paraguay.
The materials I use are gathered, harvested and treated in sustainable ways. Most of the wood I use is from the trunks of large, old-growth trees that fell during a bad storm in Spring 1997. I also prefer to treat all wood surfaces with natural finishes, which means the tones and contrasts you see in each piece are the result of each wood's natural color.
The architecturally rich, geometric investigations of my wooden furniture and sculpture appear with playful, flamboyant color and texture combinations. In this way, I strive to marry aesthetic celebration with daily function. I like the natural beauty of the materials in my work, however, I hope a sense of humor and functional balance comes through the pieces.
